H.M.S. Belfast - Battle of North Cape
At 0819 on Boxing Day 1943, HMS Belfast sighted & engaged the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst. This was an action that lasted for 9 hours in the freezing darkness of an Arctic winter. Scharnhorst was finally sunk by the combined forces of HMS Duke of York and the 10th Cruiser squadron.
This battle is re-enacted annually in the form of a six act play onboard HMS Belfast.
The dates for 2008 are 27th & 28th of December . The play follows the various stages of the action in different parts of the ship. It lasts for over 2 hours with the audience moving from location to location with the cast. This is an annual event onboard Belfast and during the play we fire one of the guns which was used in the actual engagement
