‘PICKLE NIGHT’ on HMS Alliance
A Mess Dinner commemorating the return of HMS Pickle on the 4th November 1805 with the news of The Battle of Trafalgar & the sad news of the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson.
This is the first time that such a dinner has been held on a Submarine.
We all met up in the bar of the Anglesea Hotel in Alverstoke prior to travelling to the submarine. Once aboard, the male members were introduced to the submariners initiation ceremony. Each was given a tot of rum in which was placed a submariners badge. This had to be downed in one, catching the ‘kissing kippers’ between the teeth. The badges were then pinned to the mess undress jackets.
